Accommodations

Maryland-in-Shanghai students will live in apartments or homes that are inspected, furnished and managed by UM’s affiliate program provider, the Education Abroad Network (TEAN). TEAN guarantees that amenities, locations, and roommate requests will be handled to UM’s satisfaction. Every effort is taken to ensure that housing is located in areas that are not only within close proximity to campus, but are near to shopping districts, public transportation and popular entertainment. Apartments are all found in the local Chinese equivalent of a secure gated community.

Students share the apartment with other program participants and local Chinese housemates. The Chinese housemates are all Fudan University students and are on-hand to assist program participants in adapting to the local culture. They can provide assistance with language as practice buddies and of course share their invaluable local knowledge.Housing questionnaires and preference forms will be used to help match compatible roommates, and roommate requests may also be made. Apartments are fully furnished to local standards, have kitchen and laundry facilities and a weekly basic cleaning service.

Most housing locations offer phone and high speed internet access that enable students to stay in touch with family and friends back home. This added convenience makes it easy to conduct academic research from your off-campus home.
