Academics
Academic Program
Students in the Maryland-in-Shanghai program will enroll in one required course for all study abroad partipants. Taught in Fudan’s Department of History, the course will focus on Chinese history, culture and civilization. The course includes a weekend field trip to Inner Mongolia that will give students an understanding of modern China and provide insight into many traditional customs and beliefs. Additionally, students will select from among 25-30 courses taught at Fudan in other academic departments such as Business Management, Chinese, Economics, Government & Politics, History, and Philosophy. The language of instruction in those courses is English and full-time Fudan students will join study abroad students in those courses. Mandarin Chinese-language courses taught at the beginner, intermediate or advance level will also be an option for students.
Academic credit for this program will be a mix of resident UM credit and transfer credit from Fudan. Below is a sample list of courses previously taken at Fudan in English. UM resident courses are denoted in bold with the equivalent UM course in parentheses. NOTE: Approval of resident credit is an ongoing process and courses will be added periodically.

No matter the assigned internship, students consider the opportunity to immerse themselves into daily Chinese working life a highlight of the program. These courses may not be eligible for UM
transfer credit, but this is truly a worthwhile, unique opportunity.
Transfer of credit from this course requires approval from the students’ college.
Academic Credit & Transcripts
Some credits earned on the Maryland-in-Shanghai program are Maryland resident credits, meaning that those courses taken appear on a student’s Maryland transcript with Maryland course numbers and the grades earned apply toward the student’s cumulative GPA. Other courses appear as transfer credit.
