Maryland-in-Rome

In a City with Over 2,000 Years of History, Make Some of Your Own

Maryland-in-Rome is based at the American University of Rome (AUR), the oldest independent, four-year, degree-granting American institution of higher learning in Rome. AUR offers a rigorous academic program that is dedicated to excellence in education and promotes cross-cultural exchange. Students in the Maryland-in-Rome program will live and learn in a stimulating, intellectually vibrant environment, with classmates and faculty from around the world. There is an emphasis on active learning, a goal that AUR’s small faculty to student ratio helps to facilitate. The language of instruction is English and Maryland students have access to a wide range of courses offered for resident credit, including courses that will fulfill major, minor, Honors, and CORE requirements.

Roma… the Campus and Beyond

Overlooking the historical center of the city, the university is located on top of the Janiculum, Rome’s highest hill, and just off the ancient Roman route Via Aurelia. The neighborhood offers a variety of restaurants, shops, cafes, and an outdoor market, allowing students to savor Roman living. Across the street from campus is Villa Sciarra, Rome’s oldest park. This oasis in the city has a wealth of natural beauty and countless spots to sit and study, talk with friends, and even use the University’s wireless internet access. Just a short walk away is Trastevere, a charming neighborhood nestled along the banks of the Tiber River. The university is also well connected to the city center by several bus lines, offering students easy access to all of Rome’s unmatched attractions.

While the campus itself is intimate and fosters a sense of community, students can also consider all of Rome their classroom, and are encouraged to make the most of their time in one of the world’s oldest and most culturally rich cities. Ancient history, architectural wonders, dazzling art, exquisite cuisine, world class opera and theater – Rome has something for everyone and provides students studying abroad with an unforgettable experience.

Beyond the city, Italy offers a plethora of enriching travel destinations for students, who can easily use the extensive Italian public transportation system to journey throughout the country and further experience Italian language and culture.
