England: London - Sport & Culture in the Global Marketplace

The "Sport and Culture in the Global Marketplace" (KNES389A/ KNES689J) study abroad program is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the relationship between sport, culture, and international business within today's global economy.  The study abroad component comprises of a two week program in London, during which time students are fully immersed in the complexities of the British sport industry.  While in London, students will attend lectures given by experts in the field of global sport culture, management, marketing, and media.  In addition, they make visits to prominent global sport enterprises in London (such as governing bodies, corporate sponsors, sport media corporations, major venues, professional teams). During these visit, students will interact with executives who outline the workings of the British sport industry, and the ways that global and local forces have intersected within British sport.

The two week study abroad component will be preceded by web delivery of readings, preparatory assignments and online discussion groups. The study abroad program will be based at The University of Surrey, Roehampton, in southwest London.

Faculty Directors

The program is run by Dr. David Andrews and Dr. Michael Silk, who both work in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland, College Park. They have previously been responsible for running successful "Sport and Culture in the Global Marketplace" programs to London (2000 - 2009), and Sydney (2001) through the University of Memphis and University of Maryland.

Both the program leaders hold degrees from universities in the United Kingdom and North America, and are citizens of the United Kingdom. Each has lived, worked, studied, lectured and conducted research throughout Europe, North America, and Australasia. Their area of academic expertise and research is in the social, cultural and business aspects of the global sports industry.
