Program Costs

2009-2010 Program Fees*

Academic Year 2009-2010 - - - $15,400
Fall 2009 - - - $9,200
Spring 2010 - - - $9,200
*Includes tuition, orientation, student services, personal and academic advising, initial housing payment, and excursions. This fee is paid directly to the University of Maryland.

Initial Housing Payment: A portion of each students' program fee will be used to pay for rental agency fees and approximately the first two months' rent in Nice. Students are responsible for paying the remainder of their rent directly to their family or landlord during the rest of their stay in Nice.

A $500 non-refundable deposit will be due by April 25 (for fall or year students) or October 20 (for spring students) in order to hold your place in the program. The remaining balance will be due in August (for fall or year) or December (for spring).

Other Costs

Students on the Maryland-in-Nice program are responsible for paying their own airfare, room & board, and personal expenses while abroad.

Estimated round trip airfare to Nice from the DC area: $1,000.

Housing costs vary between home stays and apartments.
The rent for a homestay placement in 2008-09 was 820 Euros a month for a single room (720 Euros for a double room). Homestays include two meals a day. Cost for 2009-2010 will be posted here as soon as it is available.
Apartments typically cost between 350 and 550 Euros per person per month (+ utilities) for a shared apartment. Food costs are higher for students staying in apartments, as meals are not included in the rent. Students staying in apartments should budget about $1,800 for food per semester.

In addition, all students should plan to budget about $1,600 a semester for personal expenses, although the exact amount will vary.

Be sure to check the latest exchange rate when calculating your estimated expenses.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

UM students can use their university, state and federal financial aid towards study abroad expenses. As the Maryland-in-Alcala program fee is charged directly to each student's account, UM students can also use the TERP payment plan when financing their study abroad experience.

Maryland-in-Nice applicants are also eligible to apply for a University of Maryland Study Abroad Scholarship. These scholarships are available for up to $1,000 and will be awarded to students based on academic background and financial need. See the scholarships page on our website for current deadlines and additional information.
