International Christian University

Japan, the land of tradition and honor, is home to the exchange program between University of Maryland students and the International Christian University in Tokyo. Students interested in studying intensive Japanese are encouraged to apply for this year-long program. Exchange students are enrolled directly at ICU, so applicants are expected to be self-sufficient and highly motivated.  As the University of Maryland does not maintain a permanent faculty presence in Japan, students handle their academic and personal lives quite independently.  As a result, exchange students have a unique opportunity to truly assimilate into the Japanese culture.

In order to qualify for the program, applicants must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and must have completed 45 credits at Maryland.  Applicants must also demonstrate a strong motivation to study the Japanese language.

The International Christian University is Japan’s oldest and largest American-style university. Its location on the outskirts of Tokyo allows students easy access to true Japanese culture – world-class cuisine, sumo tournaments, kabuki performances and much more. Japan’s elaborate rail system can also help students explore all corners of this vibrant archipelago.
