Safety and Security

The safety and security of study abroad students is of unparalleled concern for University of Maryland officials. Although we can never guarantee the safety of our students while they are in a foreign location, we do have a number of procedures in place to help manage a potential emergency and protect their wellbeing.

Preparations

While students are abroad, Study Abroad staff and the on-site Resident Director are in regular contact, and can be in touch almost immediately should a disaster take place.

The following preparations are in place for study abroad students:

  • Pre-departure and in-country orientations on health and safety procedures abroad.
  • A detailed database of information with students’ academic schedules, passport details, telephone numbers including cell phone and accommodation, and emergency contact numbers to establish contact with students and their families.
  • Contact with the local consulate and relevant in-country government departments.

Actions

In the event of an emergency, University of Maryland officials will work with the Resident Director, the local consulate and the U.S. Department of State to determine and carry out an effective action plan.

Above all, if disaster strikes, students must first follow the advice of emergency service officials – this supersedes any other directions they have been given. Secondly, if students are not at the scene themselves, they are advised to go home and tune in to the radio or television. It is at this point that any UM action plan takes effect.
