Program Calendar

Maryland-in-Berlin is a fall only program.  Students who wish to study at the FU_BEST program in the spring should follow the process for non-affiliated or sponsored programs.

Program Costs

2009-2010 Program Fees* -- Just reduced by $1,000!

This fee is paid directly to the University of Maryland.
Accepted students pay a $500 non-refundable deposit within two weeks of acceptance in order to reserve a place in the program. The remaining balance is due in August.

The program fee includes

  • tuition for up to 18 credits and course materials
  • pre-departure and on-site orientation
  • housing in apartments or with local families in Berlin
    • Students who choose the homestay option will have two meals per day provided by the family. For this reason there is an additional charge of $500 for the entire semester for homestay.
  • student services, personal and academic advising
  • extensive cultural programming, including group visits to concerts, the opera and a week-long excursion
  • monthly transportation pass

Additional costs
Maryland-in-Berlin students find there are relatively few additional costs. Students are reponsible for their own travel and personal expenses while abroad.

  • Round trip airfare DC – Berlin:        ~$   900
  • Meals (if in apartment)                  ~$1,700/ semester
  • Homestay supplement                     $   500/ semester (charged to UM account)
  • Additional meals (if in homestay)   ~$   500/ semester
  • Personal expenses (vary)              ~$1,600/ semester

Financial Aid and Scholarships

UM students can use their university, state and federal financial aid towards study abroad expenses. As the Maryland-in-Berlin program fee is charged directly to each student's account, UM students can also use the TERP payment plan when financing their study abroad experience.

Maryland-in-Berlin applicants are also eligible to apply for a University of Maryland Study Abroad Scholarship. These scholarships are available for up to $1,000 and will be awarded to students based on academic merit and financial need.

DAAD Scholarships
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships to Germany from fall 2009 to summer 2010. The application deadline is January 31st, 2009. Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany from four to ten months.
