Exchanges in Estonia

The Estonian Academy of Arts

Graduate Art students at the University of Maryland are eligible to apply to study for either a semester or one year at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Exchange students are enrolled as full-time students, so applicants are expected to be self-sufficient and highly motivated. As the University of Maryland does not maintain a permanent faculty presence in Estonia, students handle their academic and personal lives quite independently. As a result, exchange students have a unique opportunity to truly assimilate into the local culture.

Estonia
, a country of approximately 1.3 million people, is located in Northern Europe near Russia. Formerly a part of the USSR, Estonia has been independent since 1994. The Estonian Academy of Arts (EAA) is located in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital. Historically the city has been attacked and pillaged on numerous occasions. Although extensively bombed during World War II, much of the medieval Old Town still retains its charm. The Tallinn Old Town became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997.
