GERM489K/HONR348Z/ARHU498K (choose only one) is a 3-credit topics course. Tentative sites to be visited include:

  • Yaoundé, capital of Cameroon and home to the Marché Central, a huge and bustling market
  • The former colonial coastal towns of Kribi and Limbe, now popular beach resorts on the Atlantic Ocean
  • Buea, colonial capital at the foot of Mount Cameroon, with architectural reminders of German colonial rule
  • The Islamic center of Foumban, home to King Njoya's Royal Palace
  • Bamenda and colonial sites on the Ring Road, a 367-km (228-mi) circular route through Cameroon's most spectacular mountains
  • The former mission stations along the majestic Sanaga river: Marienberg (1890), Edéa and Kribi (1891) and Engelberg (1894)
  • Korup National Park, one of the continent's most important conservation sites, and home to endangered primates and rare bird species
  • The Universities of Yaoundé, Buea and Dschang
  • The city of Foumban, capital of the Bamoun people and seat of their sultan

The academic program includes pre and post-departure meetings with the Cultural Attaché (Embassy of Cameroon) and a workshop on cross-cultural issues, lectures by faculty at the Universities of Yaoundé, Buea and Dschang, readings by contemporary Cameroonian writers, and Karin U. Schestokat's postcolonial analysis of travelogues written by four German women between 1908 and 1920.

Course requirements include a critical journal which will form the basis for a short research paper, oral presentations on select topics, and participation in two student forums.
