Application

Eligibility

The Maryland-in-Alcalá program is open to all students who have a serious interest in Spain and in increasing their proficiency in the Spanish language. Applicants should be open-minded and flexible.

In addition, students must have completed 30 semester hours of college credit and must have an overall grade point average of at least a 2.75. Most students will have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher in their most recent two semesters.

Students must also demonstrate Spanish ability. Those applying for the program must demonstrate that they have received a B or better in two intermediate Spanish courses.

The Admissions Process

Applications will not be accepted or reviewed until they are complete and all supplementary materials are turned in to the Study Abroad Office.

Last Day to Apply for Spring 2010: October 1, 2009*

A complete application includes:

  • Completed Online ELF Application for Study Abroad
    • Please print a copy of your completed form to turn in with your application materials.
    • Non-University of Maryland students will need to complete a paper application instead of the ELF form. Please see the Non-UM Students page for details.
  • Personal Statement (150-300 words)
  • Supplementary Language Ability Form
  • Letter of recommendation from Spanish instructor (in a sealed envelope, or submitted by the recommender directly to the Program Coordinator.)
  • Official transcript from each college or university from which you earned at least 10 credits.
  • Non-refundable $50 application fee (check or money order made payable to the University of Maryland)

Please turn in all of the above materials simultaneously to the Study Abroad Office.

*PLEASE NOTE: Admissions for the program are made on a rolling basis, and decisions will be given in a timely manner. However, please be aware that decisions will not be made on a daily basis, so you should expect a delay between when you submit an application and when you receive notification. Because admission is competitive and space is limited, early application is advisable. Meeting the minimum GPA requirement alone is insufficient to guarantee admission.

All required materials will be considered during the admission process. You may be asked to interview with a study abroad advisor or a member of the Spanish department faculty.
