Other Costs
Costs for optional courses:
Students on the Maryland-in-Alcalá program are responsible for paying their own airfare, room & board, and personal expenses while abroad. In 2009, round trip airfare from the Washington DC area to Madrid cost roughly $1,000. It is highly recommended that accepted students purchase airline tickets with a flexible change policy.
Housing costs vary depending on the option chosen. The following is an estimate of housing costs for Spring 2009 (unless otherwise specified, all prices are monthly costs, in Euros):
Students opting for residences or independent housing will also be responsible for paying for meals throughout the semester.
Students should plan to budget about $1,600 a semester for personal expenses.
Be sure to check the latest exchange rate when calculating expenses for the semester.
UM students can use their university, state and federal financial aid towards study abroad expenses. As the Maryland-in-Alcala program fee is charged directly to each student's account, UM students can also use the TERP payment plan or tuition remission (if applicable) when financing their study abroad experience.
Accepted students are also eligible to apply for a University of Maryland Study Abroad Scholarship. These scholarships are available for up to $1,000 and will be awarded to students based on academic background and financial need. The scholarship application for Spring 2010 is due September 23, 2009.
