Programs Overview

Program Options

Students at the University of Maryland can study abroad in a number of different ways. As a parent, the most helpful thing that you can do is to discuss the pros and cons of different options with your child.

The "fit" of a study abroad program can make or break a student's experience. In order to assist students as they search through study abroad options, we require that all students attend a General Advising Session. In General Advising, study abroad advisors discuss options with students and provide resources that students can use to research opportunities. We also have Peer Mentors, students who have studied abroad and who can provide support and assistance to students as they research programs.

We also distribute a guide for determining what a student hopes to find in a study abroad program. Many students find that the programs offered through the University of Maryland are low-cost options that require little administrative paperwork.

For a full list of University of Maryland options, please see Programs for more information. The University of Maryland will also grant transfer credit for students studying on approved non-Maryland programs. For information on how to study on a non-Maryland program, please see the non-Maryland Programs page.

Academic Credit

Most study abroad experiences carry transfer credit, not resident Maryland credit. The number of credits transferred into Maryland counts towards a student's total undergraduate credits. However, the student is responsible for working with his or her academic advisor to determine how credits earned abroad can count towards graduation requirements.

All students studying abroad must check in with the Study Abroad Office before leaving, so that the advisors can assist with all necessary paperwork. Students studying on University of Maryland programs will automatically have their credits posted at the end of their time abroad.

Students studying through non-Maryland options are responsible for ensuring that their study abroad transcripts are sent to the Study Abroad Office for evaluation. Overseas transcripts sent to the Registrar's Office may not be evaluated.
