Advising

If you are interested in studying abroad, you should begin by attending a general advising session in the Study Abroad Office. Please call us at 301.314.7746 or email us to reserve a space in a general advising session. You should then go to the Study Abroad Office in 1101 Holzapfel Hall on the day and time for the session you signed up to get started on studying abroad. In general advising sessions, a Study Abroad Peer Mentor discusses:
  • Program options
  • Academics
  • Financial Information (scholarships, program fees etc.)
  • The Study Abroad Timeline and Process

General Advising

From 6/1 - 7/13, General Advising will be held:

Mondays at 1:00 pm

Thursdays at 2:00 pm

Peer Mentors

Once you have attended a general advising session, you can get assistance researching programs from a study abroad Peer Mentor.  Peer Mentors are students who have studied abroad and can assist you in determining your goals for study abroad and provide support as you research programs.  We have Peer Mentors who have studied in Italy, London, Germany, Australia, France, Spain, Turkey, South Africa, Israel, Morocco, Argentina, and Mexico. You can email the Peer Mentors to set up a time to meet or just stop by the office between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Individual Advising

Once you have narrowed your options to 2-3 program selections that best fit your academic, financial, and social needs you should then call the Study Abroad Office at 301.314.7746 in order to make an appointment with the appropriate advisor for the region to which you are interested in going.

In this individual advising session, the Study Abroad advisor will discuss the transferability of the credits from the selected study abroad program(s), as well as any particular concerns or questions you may have about studying abroad.

If you know you want to attend a Maryland program, you do NOT have to attend a general advising session and can apply directly to that program. You may also feel free to discuss that program with a Peer Mentor.

If you are considering non-UM programs, both general and individual advising are REQUIRED.

You are encouraged to be in touch with your academic advisor throughout the process of researching study abroad opportunities.
