This course will travel to the Hague in the Netherlands, Brussels in Belgium and Paris in France to examine terrorism and counterterrorism from the European perspective. While in the Hague, students will study with Dutch scholars at the Centre for Terrorism and Counterterrorism where they will focus on academic understandings of terrorism, conflict resolution, and the promotion of peace. In addition, students will take a trip to Paris to learn about French responses to terrorism. Students will also have the opportunity to tour the International Criminal Court in the Hague and the seat of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. Through this course students will gain a better understanding of the many faces of terrorism, counterterrorism, peace, and resilience within the European Union.
Dr. Katherine Worboys Izsak is the Assistant Director for Education at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START). She directs and teaches in the University of Maryland’s Undergraduate Minor in Terrorism Studies and Graduate Certificate in Terrorism Analysis. Previously, she directed research and analysis programs for the Department of Homeland Security’s National Preparedness Task Force. Dr. Worboys received her B.A. in History from Duke University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in History and Anthropology from the University of Michigan.
