Internationalization of higher education is requiring many professors and prospective professors to teach their academic disciplines in English. The University of Maryland College Park offers non-native English speaking professors from European universities an opportunity to fill in the gaps to meet this emerging demand. The next Seminar will take place Saturday, September 20 - Friday, October 3, 2008 (please plan to depart on Saturday, October 4).
This two-week seminar consists of 40 instructional hours. The program is very interactive and practice-oriented. Participants actively work on developing their knowledge of the English language and the integration of this knowledge into their own university seminar, classroom, and office. The seminar also provides an opportunity for participants to meet colleagues and make professional contacts while analyzing language and the role of communication in these situations as they observe University of Maryland peers teaching classes in their field or a closely related field. Excursions are arranged to Washington, DC and to Annapolis, Maryland. During free time, participants may use the University of Maryland Center for Recreational Services facilities and the UM library or visit sites of interest in the area. Please note that this seminar is not appropriate for those who teach English as an academic subject and wish to address matters such as curriculum design, pedagogy, or methodology for teaching English. The seminar is designed for those who wish to focus on English as a tool for teaching and on refining their abilities to apply spoken English to teach academic disciplines such as business and management, marketing, physics, mathematics, history, engineering and others.
