Extending I-20/DS-2019

If the completion date indicated on your I-20/DS-2019 form (see section 5 on I-20, section 3 on DS-2019) will pass before you can complete your studies, you must apply for a program extension before the program end date on the I-20/DS-2019 is reached. IES recommends that you see an International Student Advisor about the extension process one or two months before the end date. IES is only able to make extensions of 1 year due to SEVIS limitations.

Extension Requirements

You are eligible for an extension if the following apply:

  • You have continually maintained full-time student status.
  • The delay in completing your studies was "caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as changes of major or research topics, unexpected research problems, or documented illnesses.
  • Delays resulting from academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for an extension.
  • For J-1 students: You cannot have received a waiver of 212(e).

Procedure

You should submit the following documentation to IES to have your I-20/DS-2019 extended:

  • From your departmental academic advisor:
    • a completed Program Extension Form
    • a brief statement on departmental letter head explaining the following:
      1. The reasons for the delay in graduation
      2. That you are making progress towards your degree
      3. An estimate of when you will complete your program
    • If the delay was due to medical reasons, you will need to provide a completed Program Extension Form (Medical Reasons) from your medical doctor instead of a letter from your academic advisor.
  • Original copies of your financial support information
    • Proof of liquid finances to cover all estimated expenses (tuition, fees, books, insurance, and living expenses) for the duration of the extension.
      • An assistantship/fellowship offer letter covering the duration of the extension.
      • A current official bank statement from your sponsor. The statement should clearly indicate the name(s) of the account holder(s) and the actual amount of money in the account(s).
        • If you have a sponsor, the following information from your sponsor is required:
    • If you have dependent(s), please show additional financial support of $4500 for each dependent.
  • Copy of your current passport ID/expiration date page
  • For J-1 students: Proof of medical insurance

A new I-20/DS-2019 with the new end date will be produced after your eligibility and documents are verified.
