Intern Abroad

Getting Started & Planning Considerations

Once you've decided that an international internship is for you, you will need to research your options. Here are a few considerations that you will want to keep in mind during your search:

  • Academic credit: You may be able to receive credit for your international internship experience. There are UM study abroad programs that include an internship component and some UM academic departments offer credit within the major to students completing an internship. See the list of departmental internship coordinators to inquire what your options are for receiving credit for your internship.
  • Finances & costs: The majority of international internships are unpaid, although there may be some longer term paid internship positions or short term paid work abroad positions. Credit bearing or study abroad internships typically have a tuition cost associated with them as they traditionally offer more on site services such as housing. See the finances section for more information.
  • Location: It is possible to gain international experience without leaving the U.S. With UM’s proximity to Washington D.C., there are many internship opportunities for UM students with many of the international organizations located nearby.
  • Type: Depending on what kind of experience you are seeking, there are different types of international internships that you may want to consider.
  • Tips for a successful internship: The University of Michigan's International Center includes some helpful pointers
  • Timeline: Create a timeline so that you have enough time to make arrangements and prepare for your international volunteering experience.
